We offer a wide range of film capacitors with low ohmic losses and a very low parasitic inductance

What is a film capacitor used for?

Because of features like stability, low cost, and low inductance, film capacitors are utilized in a variety of applications, including circuits for high-frequency filtering, high-frequency bypass, and first or second-order filtering. Electronics, household appliances, telecommunications, electric power, electrified trains, hybrid cars, wind power, solar power, and many more sectors use them extensively.

The film capacitor has low ESR and ESL values and a low distortion factor. In addition, in terms of the aging time, the film capacitor tends to resist the wearing-out stage for the longest period. As a result, it is a superior option for high-voltage and high-frequency applications.

What are the advantages of film capacitors?

A key advantage of modern film capacitors is that their inherent geometry structure results in very low ohmic losses and a very low parasitic inductance, which makes them especially suitable for applications with very high surge currents (snubbers) and for AC power applications, or for applications at higher frequencies.

Another feature of film capacitors is the possibility of choosing different film materials for the dielectric layer to select for desirable electrical characteristics, such as stability, wide temperature range, or ability to withstand very high voltages.

For example, polypropylene film capacitors are specified because of their low electrical losses and their nearly linear behaviour over a very wide frequency range, for stability Class 1 applications in resonant circuits, comparable only with ceramic capacitors.

What is the difference between ceramic and film capacitors?

The key differences are given below:

Volumetric efficiency: The volumetric efficiency of ceramic capacitors is better than film capacitors.

Mechanical stress: Film capacitors can withstand mechanical stresses better than a ceramic capacitor.

Medium: The dielectric material of ceramic capacitors is ceramic while film capacitors use plastic film.

Mechanical deformation: The ceramic capacitor can withstand high temperatures. It can accordingly prevent mechanical deformation, unlike film capacitors.

Applications: They have different applications.

Overall capacitance and voltage ratings: A film capacitor has higher capacitance and voltage ratings than a ceramic capacitor.
